What to Wear for your Cap and Gown Photos
The end of your senior year is almost here, and it’s time to take your cap and gown photos!🥳But now comes the big question: What should you wear under your cap and gown?
No need to stress! The most important thing is to wear something that feels like you. If you’re comfortable and confident, it will show in your photos. Below, I’ve gathered some helpful tips to make choosing your outfit easy and stress-free.
What to wear to take cap and gown pictures?
Option 1: Dressy and Polished
Going for a dressy look is always a solid choice. After all, graduation is a big deal, and these photos will be treasured for years to come!
For guys: A button-up shirt with a collar looks great, paired with slacks or dark jeans. If you want an even more formal look, consider adding a tie or blazer. Pro tip: Make sure to iron or steam your shirt—wrinkles aren’t a good look for professional photos.
For girls: A dress is classic and elegant. To avoid looking bulky under the gown, choose a fitted or waist-defining dress rather than something boxy. It's preferable that the length is equal to or shorter than your gown. And if you’re comfortable in heels, wear them! They can really help elongate your look.
Option 2: Casual and Fun
If dressy isn’t your thing, that's no problem! You can absolutely go for a more casual look while still keeping it stylish.
For guys: A well-fitted polo or a nice, solid-colored t-shirt with clean jeans or chinos can work well. Just avoid oversized or super casual pieces like gym shorts or hoodies.
For girls: Cute shorts with a stylish top or a romper are great choices. And if you’re heading off to college, wearing a t-shirt or sweatshirt from your future school is a fun way to show off your plans!
No matter your style, make sure your shoes complement your outfit—yes, they will show in some photos
(and skip the flip-flops, puh-leez!)
Choosing the Right Colors
Your graduation gown will play a big role in your overall look, so consider its color when picking your outfit.
- If your gown is a bold school color (red, blue, green, etc.), stick to neutral tones underneath like black, white, or cream to avoid clashing.
- If your gown is a neutral color (black, white, or navy), you have more flexibility! You might want to incorporate your school colors into your outfit or just choose a color that looks great on you.
- It's best to avoid loud patterns or neon shades—they can be distracting in photos and may give a weird color cast to your skin. No thank you!
Don't Forget the Details
Before your session, be sure to:
✅ Gather your cap, gown, cords, and any other accessories you want in your photos so you don't forget them.
✅ Steam your gown ahead of time (ironing can scorch it 😬)
✅ Try on your outfit with the gown beforehand to make sure you love how it looks!
Cap and gown photos aren’t just about the outfit—they’re about celebrating you and all you’ve accomplished. Whether you go dressy or casual, the key is to feel comfortable and confident. And don’t be afraid to let your personality shine—especially in those fun shots with friends!
