Mini Session vs. Full Session

Which one is right for you?

You may not believe what I’m about to say...Is there such a thing as a mini session NOT being right for you? (Gasp!)

Believe it or not, there could be.

There are some important things to consider before you decide if you should book a full family session or a mini family session.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my mini sessions and the opportunity to work with so many families at once, but what’s most important to me is that you have a wonderful experience and come away from our time together with exactly what you have in mind

Making the right decision can be the difference between a happy photo experience or a disappointing one, for you and for me as the photographer.

So what should you consider when deciding to book a mini or full session?

Here are 4 questions to ask when deciding whether to book a full session or a mini session.

1. Does the theme and/or location match your style?

Seems like an obvious one, but maybe this gets overlooked. If your Pinterest board is full of  rustic or boho country family photos in a large field with big skies, then you probably shouldn’t book a mini session happening at a tree-filled park or garden. The photos just won’t be the same.

If what’s most important to you is capturing some updated family photos and you’re not so specific about location or theme, then a mini session is probably your best choice. Be honest about what you’re wanting for your photos and decide accordingly.

2. Are you always running late?

Be super honest about this one! Mini sessions are very time-sensitive because clients are stacked with specific time blocks one right after the other. If you’re late to yours, you will have less shoot time than the 15 minutes, or you may even have to forfeit your spot.

If you and your family are super punctual and you feel confident that you can make it to your mini session on time (which means a couple of minutes early) then, no prob Bob! However, if you know that the odds of you and your family making it on time are slim to none, you might want to consider booking a full session.

3. How specific are you with your photo expectations?

A mini session is perfect if you’re hoping to get a few updated photos of your family, mostly counting on the discretion of the photographer with posing and shots.  But, if you have a specific shot list in mind, and you will be disappointed if you can’t get those specific shots, you would do better to book a full session where we will have plenty of time to cover everything. Because our time together at a mini session is so brief, there simply isn’t always an opportunity to accommodate every specific shot you may want.

4. What are the personalities of your kids?

Are your kids outgoing, cooperative and listen well? Or are they especially high energy or shy? The answer to that can make a difference in which type of session would be best for your family. If you know your kids will listen to instructions and cooperate, or even if they won’t, if you’re okay with capturing them as is, then a mini session will be great! However, if you know your kids will have a harder time settling in and you really want specific photos of them, then a full session would be a better choice.

These are just a few things to consider when choosing a mini session or a full session. I hope these points will help you make the best decision for your family. Whichever one you choose, I can’t wait to meet you and capture precious moments for you and your family!
