There are two kinds of people in this world:
✨ Those who seem effortlessly photogenic.
😅 And those of us who…well, let’s just say the camera doesn’t always love us back.
I’m definitely in that second group.
Every time I see a camera pointed my way, my brain goes into full-on panic mode: How should I stand? Tilt my head? What do I do with my hands?! And somehow, the harder I try, the more awkward I look. The pro photographer who looks the worst in photos...ironic, right? 😄
So if you’ve ever said, “I’m just not photogenic,” believe me, I get it. And you’re definitely not alone.
But here’s the good news: you don’t need to be a natural in front of the camera to look amazing in your photos. That’s literally what a professional photographer is there for — to guide you through poses, help you feel comfortable, and bring out your natural beauty.
So no, this isn’t one of those posts where I tell you to “pop a leg” or memorize model poses. Instead, here are three simple, real-life ways to look and feel your best in front of the camera — whether it’s for your senior photos, a family session, or even updated brand headshots.
There’s a reason it’s called beauty sleep!
When you’re rested, you not only look better with brighter eyes and fresher skin, but you feel better too. A good night’s sleep helps you show up relaxed, confident, and ready to enjoy the moment.
So in the days leading up to your session, try to prioritize rest. Your future self, and your photos, will thank you.
Nothing kills confidence faster than tugging at a shirt that doesn’t fit right or wearing something that just doesn’t feel like “you.”
When you’re picking outfits, skip the trends if they don’t suit your style. Choose clothes that you love, that flatter your shape, and that let you move comfortably.
Whether you’re dressing for your senior photos or a family session, the goal is the same: you should feel amazing, not distracted. Confidence always photographs better than perfection.
Here’s your permission slip to not need to know what to do. That’s my job. 😉
When you show up, all you have to do is be yourself and have fun. I’ll take care of the lighting, posing, and everything else. The more you relax, the more natural and genuine your photos will look.
Follow these tips and you'll be amazed at how photogenic you actually can be!
